Feature

The feature's drafts changed not only to make it more interesting but to better match the Front Cover, Contents and the style of the magazine. First draft:

My first feature had my basic idea but wasn't very believable as a professional feature for a magazine. Second draft:

I started to get an idea of how i wanted the features layout to look like but i still wasn't sure about the colour or the empty spaces. Final Feature:

My final Feature is clear without being empty and eye catching to the readers i used the title to help design the page which i think was effective.

Contents

I also made drafts for my contents showing how ideas changed over time:

Like my front cover this draft is dull, boring and not very appealing but has the basics needed. My second draft:

This contents is a lot better but after changing my front cover i wanted the two to connect better so that you could tell that they are apart of the same magazine. My Final Contents:

I think my final Contents is strong it's eye catching, interesting and original without losing any of the conventions required in a magazine.

Front Cover

During my magazine development I came up with many different drafts and ideas some I liked some i didn't. I started with my Front Cover:

I think this first draft is dull and boring but is a good bases as a start point to build on and change which i started in my second draft:

This draft is better as there is colour and I had developed the title more to make it more interesting but it's still very plan, empty. My final cover:

My final piece i think appeals better to my target audience because it's more interesting and stands out better than the original.

Planning Layouts

When desingning my page layout i researched other magazines and sketched images to play around with, I looked at other magazines such as 'planb'.

I looked at the fonts, the size of the font and the image in relation to the image.

Setting up images

These are some of the images I took using different poses, angles, distances, lighting and areas. I took a variety of shots so that i had plenty to play with until I got the result i wanted.

I used this image for my front cover because the long shot makes it possible for the audience to see both her body language and facial language which helps show what this magazine is about also her clothes helps show the genre of the music.

I didn't use this image because it was two close and because she started laughing so the image would work with the rest of the magazine.

I used this image on my contents as it shows clearly who she is and what she looks like for the reader.

I used this image in my feature because it has strong body language and setting helps to show the ruff sort of music they play.

Sketching images

Before creating the magazine on the computer i started designing with sketches thinking about images and layout.

Front cover images

I researched other magazines looking at the angles, distance, frames and lighting of the images so when I took my own i thought about how this skills were used putting them into my own images.

After taking many images I chose this image. Using Fireworks 8 i cut out the background so that i could create my own. Sometimes background can be useful as you can use mise en scene but i decided that the one i could create would have a better affect than the one already there.

Mastheads

When i started thinking about my masthead i noticed how over magazine mastheads connected to the genre of music for example kerrang represents the noise of the guitar showing the genre straight away to the audience so I decided that my Masthead should do the same, which is why i chose 'Chords' as it represents the strings of the guitar.
I then used a graphic to make my Masthead more interesting using a picture of a neck of a guitar that shot myself and cut out 'Chords' making it wobbly as if vibrating because of the music. I also made the letters yellow to represent electricity, power and volume of the music therefore my magazine.

Looking At Conventions

Before i started designing my magazine i looked at the conventions:
  • Front cover

  • Contents

  • Feature pages

I looked at magazines such as nme and kerrange for ideas in designing these conventions.

Investigating The Market

To create my own magazine i needed to understand the normal conventions of a magazine so I looked at other magazines and their websites that are similar to my own such as:

Looking at these gave me an idea of what i could do that would look professional. It also help me to figure out my target audience as mine would be roughly the same, i found that music magazines in general tended to be targeted at teenagers or young adults 16- 20. Music magazines such as rock tend to try an show that life is for living and that your not alone which is why it appeals to so many teenagers because they can relate to the meaning in the songs and therefore the magazines. i found this census information on sites like abc and nrs.
